PRP and GFC hair treatment
Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and GFC (growth factor concentrate) are scalp injections made from your own blood. They are used for early hair loss and thinning, often together with medicines. At Dr. Madhu's, PRP costs Rs. 4,000 and GFC costs Rs. 5,000 per session.
How PRP and GFC are made
PRP: a small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma that is rich in platelets. This plasma is injected into the thinning areas of the scalp.
GFC: the platelets in your blood are activated so that they release their growth factors, and these are collected as a concentrate, which is injected into the scalp.
What they can and cannot do
- They are used for thinning hair, where hair roots are still present. They do not grow hair on areas that are already bald; for those, a hair transplant is the option.
- Results vary from person to person, and the treatment needs to be repeated.
- They are often combined with medicines prescribed by the doctor.

Side effects and who should not have it
The injections can cause pain, redness or swelling of the scalp for a short time. Tell the doctor if you take blood thinners, have a blood or platelet disorder, or have an infection on the scalp: the doctor checks whether the treatment is safe for you before starting.
