FUT (Strip) Hair Transplant in Hyderabad
Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also called the strip method, removes a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back and sides of the head. The strip is divided into follicular units under microscopes, and these are transplanted into the bald area.
How FUT is done
A strip of the superficial layers of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the back and sides of the head (the donor area). At Dr. Madhu's, the strip is then dissected into fine follicular units under stereo microscopes.
Dissecting under stereo and Mantis microscopes, and cutting only what can be clearly seen (the open method), reduces the chance of grafts being damaged (transection). There are only hand full of centres in the world who use such sophisticated equipment's for grafts dissection.
The grafts are implanted into the bald (recipient) area through micro slits. To help grafts survive, the team uses a non-touch technique of implantation, keeps the grafts in precise temperature controlled PRP solution and implants them at a good speed. The donor scar and how it is minimised
FUT leaves a linear scar in the donor area. At Dr. Madhu’s, Dr. Ram and Dr. Madhu have refined their surgical techniques over the years, adopting the latest methods, advanced suture materials, and precise wound-closure techniques like trichophytic closure and 3 layer suturing. These methods encourage hair growth along the scar line.
How many grafts in one session
FUT allows more grafts to be taken in single session from small donor area in a single session than FUE, which is why it suits patients with wide bald area and very minimal donor area. Sessions sizes of 2500 grafts, super mega session of 4000 and giga sessions of 4000+ grafts have been performed at centre in a single day using either single strip or multiple strips depending on donor flexibility and grafts required in the recipient zone.
FUT or FUE: Which Is Best?
Neither FUT nor FUE is universally superior; the best technique depends on your donor density, scalp laxity, hair loss pattern, and graft requirements. FUE avoids a linear scar and is often preferred for shorter hairstyles, while FUT may be suitable when a large number of grafts are needed and scalp laxity is adequate. A surgeon’s assessment helps determine which technique can safely maximize your available donor grafts.
Who Is good Candidate for FUT Hair Transplant?
FUT is for candidates has adequate donor hair density, good scalp laxity, and significant hair loss requiring a large number of grafts. FUT may be suitable for patients who want to maximize donor graft availability while avoiding extensive shaving of the donor area.
FUT Procedure: Step by Step
The FUT procedure begins with scalp assessment and hairline design, followed by local anesthesia. A thin strip of scalp is removed from the donor area, and the incision is closed with sutures or staples. The strip is then dissected under magnification into individual follicular grafts. Tiny recipient sites are created at appropriate angles, and the grafts are carefully implanted.
Recovery Process in FUT Hair Transplant?
After FUT hair transplant, the donor incision is closed using absorbable sutures or surgical staples. Initial wound healing typically takes around 5 to 7 days, depending on individual recovery. Mild tightness and discomfort in the donor area are common during the first two days, while severe or unbearable pain is rare.
What Are the Risks and Side Effects of FUT Hair Transplant?
FUT hair transplant is generally safe when performed by an experienced surgeon, but temporary side effects may include swelling, redness, pain, numbness, and mild tightness in the donor area. Potential risks include a linear scar, and like any other method wound healing complications, infection, temporary shock loss, and reduced scalp sensation. Proper surgical technique and post-operative care help minimize these risks.
What Is the Cost of FUT Hair Transplant?
The cost of an FUT hair transplant depends on the number of grafts required, the clinic, and the surgeon’s expertise. At an estimated rate of ₹60 per graft, a 2,000-graft procedure would cost around ₹1,20,000. Use a hair transplant graft calculator to get a rough cost estimate based on your required graft count. The final price may vary depending on your treatment plan.
