Combination FUE and FUT hair transplant

A combination hair transplant uses both FUT and FUE for the same patient. A strip of scalp is taken for FUT, and extra grafts are taken one at a time by FUE from other parts of the donor area, so more grafts can be moved than with either method alone.

Why combine FUE and FUT

The donor area at the back and sides of the head holds a limited number of hair roots that resist balding. FUT takes grafts from a narrow strip in the middle of this area. FUE can then take additional grafts from the parts of the donor area the strip does not reach. Used together, the two methods can give more grafts in total while keeping the donor area evenly covered.

Who it may suit

• People with a large bald area who need more grafts than one method alone can give
• People who have had a FUT procedure before and need more grafts
• People whose donor area is good enough for both methods, which the doctor checks at consultation

Trade-offs

• Two kinds of donor scars: a thin line from the FUT strip, and small dot scars from FUE. But both scars are smaller than individual method alone
• A longer procedure than either method alone
• Recovery in the donor is usually faster than FUT alone
