The recipient area

The recipient area is the part of the scalp that has lost hair and needs transplantation. Its size decides how many grafts are needed, and whether more than one session is required.

How the bald area is measured

The outcome of a hair transplant depends largely on the size of the bald area and how well it is covered: the larger the area, the more grafts are needed. The bald area is measured in sq cms.

Grafts are placed at 30 to 35 grafts per square centimetre, varying with the extent of balding and the health of the scalp. An average session of 3000 grafts covers an area about 80-100 sq cms at density of 30-35 grafts/ sq cm. Transplanted density more than 35 grafts / sq cm might effect graft survival and less than 25 grafts / sq cm might appear sparse.

When more than one session is needed

If the recipient area is very large, more grafts may be needed than the donor area can give in one session. In that case a second session, and for very large areas a third, may be required.

  • Hair Transplantation has advanced to such a start large areas like grade v, vi ,vii area covered in a single day with in 6 to 8 hours. In rare case the large session is divided into 2 subsequent days.
  • Some patient might have lot existing hair during first session of transplant which is prone to be lost in subsequent years. In such cases a second session and very rarely a thirs session may be required to improve the density.
