Dense packing
Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]
Dense packing means transplanting a large number of follicular units close together in each square centimetre. It gives density to the transplanted hair and a more natural appearance.
How dense packing works
A normal scalp has many follicular units in every square centimetre (70 to 120 follicular units). A transplant cannot match that, so the aim is to place grafts densely enough to look natural. At the centre, grafts are placed at 30 to 35 grafts per square centimetre, varying with balding and scalp health.
What makes it possible
Dense packing needs grafts made ultra-refined under microscopes, and very small slits made with micro-blades and sapphire blades, so that many grafts fit close together.
