The open method of graft dissection

Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]

The open method of dissection means only cutting what can be clearly seen under magnification. It reduces the number of hair follicles damaged when the donor strip is dissected.

Why it matters

Every hair follicle is precious to a person with hair loss, so removing and dissecting the donor strip should not damage live follicles. Older methods used quicker, "blind" dissection, which damaged (transected) follicles in large numbers.

The four-hook method

Using four hooks to hold the donor tissue while dissecting is one example of the open method. It takes more time and precision, but saves as many follicles as possible.
