Microscopic graft dissection

Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]

Grafts are dissected under stereo microscopes, which give three-dimensional magnification so the depth of each graft can be seen. This helps reduce the number of grafts damaged during dissection (transection).

Slivering under the Mantis microscope

Slivering, cutting the donor strip into thin slices, is the first and a very important step in making follicular units. The technician doing it must be specially trained, and a Mantis microscope is used for this step. If either the technician or the microscope is not right, many follicles can be wasted.

Dissection under stereo microscopes

Unlike ordinary microscopes, stereo microscopes show depth, which helps avoid cutting through grafts. Training a technician to use one well takes commitment and long hours. Microscopes sometimes need to be modified for this work, especially their lighting, so knowledge of microscopes and lighting is helpful.
