How to judge the quality of a hair transplant
Medically reviewed by [medical reviewer name], [review date]
The quality of a hair transplant can be judged by anyone once the hair has fully grown. Some signs of quality can also be seen during the operation and straight after it.
After full regrowth
Look at:
- how natural the transplanted grafts look
- hair density
- the design of the hairline
- how well the bald area is covered
- how visible the scar in the donor area is
New hair is visible from the 4th to 5th month, and it reaches the density of your existing hair from the 6th to 8th month. In a good result, the grown hair follows the direction of your original hair, so it is hard to tell you have had surgery.
During the operation
Quality can be judged during surgery too, though surgeons and doctors notice these points more easily:
- you are awake and comfortable during the procedure
- the operating area is clean, with minimal blood loss
- trichophytic closure is used to minimise the donor scar
- grafts are dissected under stereo microscopes, which produce ultra-refined follicular units
- small incisions (0.7 to 0.9 mm) are made in the recipient area
- proper sterilisation is followed, to prevent infection after surgery
- anaesthetics and other drugs are kept to the minimum needed
- the team includes several qualified doctors
- the surgery is completed in the least time possible, which a large, skilled team helps with
Immediately after surgery
- the density of the transplanted grafts (follicular units per square centimetre)
- the number of grafts in the session and the area covered
- healthy skin between the transplanted grafts
- little or no pain during or after surgery
- grafts angled in line with your existing hair
- minimal dressing
